Wood Turning is the art of shaping wood with a chisel while the wood is being spun at high speeds.
A modern lathe, where these bowls were turned, is an off-spring of the foot-powered lathe used in Europe in the 15th Century.
Woods:
My bowls are creations from pieces of different woods that I have collected. Certain woods lend themselves to especially beautiful turnings. Often, wood from near the stump yields highly unique grain patterns that are especially effective. "Spalted" wood is one that is in early stages of decay and has been attacted by fungus, resulting a marbled effect. If turned in early stages of decay, the wood will still be stable; the drying and finishing will prevent further disentegration.
Design:
Many times, simpler is better, particularly for a highly figures piece. In this way, the emphasis is placed on the grain patterns, rather than fancy turnings.
